Whats the whole point of such a federation? I hope they dont do this. Either all open or not.

I’m not sure what did they do, but now the voting system changed for this bug (it only allows 1 vote per person), and it is also marked as “Product: (archived) Old REST API”.

I doubt they will ever open their chat to federation.

Actually he does. He wrote that Facebook is very unlikely to EVER support federation like that, but possibly would support federation for users who first register for a Facebook account so that Facebook could tie the remote (federated) user to a Facebook account first.

Yes, I understand that no registration would be the ideal solution, and believe me, I would love it if they implemented it that way. However, I doubt Facebook would go for that (at least at first) since it doesn't fit with the type of contact management and privacy control system they have in place. So I was just speculating as to what S2S support with Facebook might look like. Now, there have been rumors flying around about Facebook developing a full-blown webmail solution, and if that comes to pass, I'll be surprised if they don't throw in a fully open federated XMPP chat system to go with it.

XMPP federated communications do NOT require any registration when they are done properly. You’d just go on Facebook, type someoneelse@gmail.com into the chat client, and it would connect and work. (There are also subscriptions to be managed, but those are handled automatically on fully-implemented XMPP clients like Google Talk and GMail Chat.
