I am keeping a running list of hotfixes released for Windows Vista (and now XP SP3), including those that are not pushed out to Windows Update. I thought I would publish this for everyone.

Note that this is only a list of the hotfixes that are publicly available on Microsoft's web site. There are more fixes available for specific issues if you call technical support. Most of these issues are documented in the Microsoft support knowledgebase.

Stay up to date: Subscribe to the RSS feed to receive updates whenever new hotfixes are posted, or have RSS updates delivered to your inbox or IM account with FeedBlitz. Feeds are available for individual Windows versions as well.

Note: The following applies to Windows Vista only.

The easiest way to install a bunch of hotfixes on a new Windows installation is to create a Windows Vista DVD with them integrated. This is a simple process for Windows Vista. Create an ISO image of your current Windows Vista DVD, create a folder called update in the root directory of the image, dump all of the .msu files into that folder, and then save a new image and burn it. You will need a tool like UltraISO to do this (and you must make sure that you use an existing Vista DVD or image as the base and the boot information is preserved, you can't just make a new image from scratch). Vista will automatically install all of the updates in the update folder during installation if you use this new DVD.

Note that you cannot integrate Windows Vista SP1 onto a Vista install DVD using this method; it works with regular hotfixes only. If you want to get a Vista DVD with SP1 integrated, you have to get it from Microsoft, or get it as a new copy of Vista once Microsoft and manufacturers start including the SP1 DVD.

Jayson M. writes and tells me that he has successfully integrated SP1 using Vista Update Integrator. I haven't tried this yet myself, but it looks like a pretty capable program. (It's in German, though.)

vLite also has beta support for slipstreaming SP1 now.

If Vista is already installed, you can install a bunch of hotfixes in a row with no user interaction. Just run an elevated command prompt, navigate to the folder containing the hotfixes, and run:

for %i in (*) do start /wait wusa %i /quiet /norestart

You can replace the * with *x86* or *x64* to pick only one type of hotfix, if the folder contains both.
